LEADERS OPPORTUNITY FUND (LOF)

The mandate of the LOF program is to assist universities in the attraction and retention of leading researchers by the acquisition of state-of-the-art infrastructure and the creation of competitive packages of support through infrastructure and operating and maintenance costs to attain new Faculty members.

The LOF may be used for a current Faculty member with a full-time academic appointment or a candidate being recruited by the university. It is designed for one Faculty member or a group of up to three Faculty members, if there is proven need to share the infrastructure. It is not intended for large groups, centres, or departments. Applicants who have received funding through the LOF, New Opportunities Fund, Canada Research Chairs Infrastructure Fund, or Career Award are eligible to apply provided they demonstrate the need for further funding.

The CFI allocates LOF funds to eligible institutions, such as McMaster. Each Faculty at McMaster has an LOF allocation.  If you are considering an LOF application , you must first obtain approval from your Department Chair and Faculty Dean.  The amount of the maximum CFI request is also set by the Faculty Dean.

The LOF has three streams as follows:

1. Research infrastructure alone
2. Research infrastructure with a Canada Research Chair
3. Research infrastructure from the CFI and research support from the Tri- Council agencies

Proposals requesting less than $1M in total costs may be submitted in February, June and October of each year. Proposals requesting between $1M and $2M must be submitted only in the February competition and require a Notice of Intent, due December 15.  If you have any questions regarding the LOF program, please contact your Research Office for Administration, Development & Support (ROADS) representative, or contact Sherisse Webb, Assistant Director, Development, ROADS, at webbsh@mcmaster.ca, ext. 26946.
