Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI)

The federal government established the CFI, an independent corporation, in 1997 to strengthen Canada’s capacity for innovation. The CFI’s mandate is to fund research infrastructure, which includes the state-of-the-art equipment, laboratories, buildings, and databases needed to conduct research.

Typically, the CFI will fund up to 40 per cent of a project’s infrastructure costs. The remaining funds will be derived from institutional support and other partners from the public, private, and voluntary sectors.

In addition to stimulating Canadian innovation, funding from the CFI is designed to:

  • attract and retain highly skilled research personnel in Canada;
  • stimulate the training of Highly Qualified Personnel through research;
  • promote networking, collaboration, and multidisciplinarity among researchers, institutions, and sectors;
  • ensure the optimal use of research infrastructure within and among Canadian institutions;
  • encourage long-term economic growth, such as creating spin-off ventures and the commercialization of discoveries.

All CFI applications from McMaster researchers, including those led by other institutions, require Faculty and University endorsement. For information on the application process, please see the appropriate program. Leaders Opportunity Fund (LOF) New Initiatives Fund (NIF) and Leading Edge Fund (LEF) With each approved CFI infrastructure award, the CFI provides operations and maintenance (O&M) support through the Infrastructure Operating Fund (IOF). This fund is intended to contribute to the ongoing operations and maintenance costs of the CFI purchased infrastructure, and is allocated through
an internal process. As per CFI policy requirements, McMaster University has established an O&M Plan which can be accessed at the following link.

If you have any questions regarding CFI, please contact your Research Office for Administration, Development & Support (ROADS) representative, or contact Sherisse Webb, Assistant Director, Development, ROADS, at, ext. 26946.
