Canada Research Chairs Program (CRCs)

INTRODUCTION
In 2000, the Government of Canada established the Canada Research Chairs (CRC) program to create 2000 research professorships in institutions across Canada. The government invests $300 million per year to attract and retain world-class investigators. The objective of the program is for Chairholders to attain research excellence in engineering, the natural sciences, health sciences, humanities, and the social sciences.

The institution nominates Chairholders and administers the funds. At McMaster, CRC applications require Faculty endorsement and interested researchers must consult with their Department Chair and Faculty Dean.

The CRC program has two streams:

Tier I:

  • tenable for seven years and renewable
  • are for outstanding researchers acknowledged by their peers as world leaders in their fields
  • the university receives $200,000 annually for seven years for each Tier 1 CRC

Tier II:

  • tenable for five years and renewable once
  • are for exceptional emerging researchers, acknowledged by their peers as having the potential to lead in their field
  • the university receives $100,000 annually for five years for each Tier II CRC

CRCs may also apply for infrastructure support through the Canada Foundation for Innovation’s Leaders Opportunity Fund (LOF).
