CIHR is Canada's major federal funding agency for health research. Its objective is to excel, according to internationally accepted standards of scientific excellence, in the creation of new knowledge and its translation into improved health for Canadians, more effective health services and products and a strengthened Canadian health care system.


The CIHR Open Operating Grant Program (OOGP) provides operating funds to support research proposals in all areas of health research, including randomized controlled trials.


The main objectives of OOGP are to:

Support original, high quality projects or teams/programs of research
Support individual researchers and groups of researchers
Support research in all areas and disciplines with relevance to health
Contribute to the creation and use of health-related knowledge
Contribute to the dissemination, commercialization/knowledge translation, and use of health related knowledge
Develop and maintain Canadian health research capacity, including research training


Please be advised that this will be the final round of regular OOGP prior to the move to the reformed, adjusted grant offering format and schedule.

The Research Office for Administration, Development and Support (ROADS) invites you to attend an information session on CIHR’s Fall Operating Grant program competition. This session will be targeted towards potential applicants in the Faculties of Humanities, Social Sciences, Business, Science and Engineering.


The information session will provide:

·        details on CIHR’s operating grant program

·        details on the electronic application process and ROADS review process

·        an expert panel comprised of CIHR review committee members and successful applicants to answer questions and provide advice

Application Process:

The application process for this funding opportunity is comprised of two stages: Registration and Application.


If you plan to apply to the March 2014 Open Operating Grant competition, you must first register online using ResearchNet. The registration deadline is 8:00pm February 3rd, 2014. Full applications received from candidates who have not registered will not be considered by CIHR.


A first draft of the full application should be submitted to ROADS by February 12th, 2014. The final draft must be submitted to ROADS via ResearchNet by February 24th, 2014. ROADS will forward the application to CIHR by 4:00pm March 3rd, 2014.

To apply for CIHR funding, you must:
Be affiliated with an eligible Canadian institution or organization by the time the funding begins
Not be employed by Canadian federal government departments or agencies or for-profit organizations unless affiliated with a university



There is no maximum or minimum with respect to funds requested or the term of funding. Please note that equipment is not an eligible expense.
