Government of Canada, Canada Research Coordinating Committee:  New Frontiers in Research Fund – Transformation Stream

It is anticipated the Canada Research Coordinating Committee will launch the inaugural New Frontiers in Research Fund - Transformation Stream competition in the coming weeks.

The objective of the Transformation Stream is to support large-scale, Canadian-led, interdisciplinary research projects that 1) address a major problem or challenge, and 2) have the potential for real and lasting change.

The challenge may be fundamental, leading to a scientific breakthrough, or applied, with a social, economic, environmental or health impact.  All projects are expected to be world-leading, drawing on global research expertise, where relevant.

Eligible projects will:

.  propose a novel, world-leading approach that is different from the current state-of-the art approaches to the issue;
.  have the potential to be transformative;
.
present a noticeable leap or tangible breakthrough versus an incremental advance.

There are three stages for the Transformation competition:

1.    Notice of Intent/Expression of Interest  (mandatory in order to submit a Letter of Intent)
.  to inform reviewer recruitment
.  not adjudicated

2.   Letter of Intent (mandatory to be considered for the full Application stage)
.  will be reviewed by a multidisciplinary/multisectoral review panel (including a significant number of non-academic members)
.  focus on high reward (potential for change, need, and timeliness)
.  between 20 and 30 applications will be invited to submit a full Application

3.  Full Application
Two phases of review:

Phase 1:  will be reviewed by external experts (5 to 10 reviewers from different disciplines and sectors) and a multidisciplinary review panel
.  focus on feasibility (likelihood of success)

Phase 2:  will be reviewed by a jury composed of academics and non-academics
.  focus on high reward (potential for change)

Faculty endorsement is required.
