CFI Innovation Fund (formerly Leading Edge and New Initiatives Funds)

Through the Innovation Fund (IF - formerly Leading Edge and New Initiatives Funds), the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) invests in state-of-the-art research infrastructure that allows institutions to capitalize on their areas of research strength by developing a critical mass of research capacity that is internationally competitive. The IF program supports initiatives that allow institutions and their researchers to build on and enhance an emerging strategic priority area, accelerate current research and technology development work or take established capabilities to a globally competitive level.

Application Process:

The IF competition has traditionally been held every few years. Each institution is given a maximum allocation of CFI funding for which they can compete. A rigorous internal review process is used to determine which applications will be submitted by McMaster.

For information please contact Sherisse Webb, Assistant Director, Development, at or extension 26946.

An eligible infrastructure project involves the modernization, acquisition, development or leasing of research infrastructure. Eligible costs include all goods and services required to bring the new infrastructure into operation. Eligible costs do not include research personnel or any part of the ongoing costs of operating and maintaining a facility. Examples of non-eligible items include components of infrastructure used for teaching and clinical care, teaching and clinical/patient care space, office supplies and administrative expenses. Certain types of infrastructure (campus networks, construction, databases, high performance computing, and digital libraries) have special guidelines.
